S1Ep11 Beatrice Valek | Being a good activist and ally for intersectional minorities
Update: 2020-06-09
Description
What if I told you that improving gender equality could combat climate change?
It's uncomfortable to talk about diversity, especially when you may be the dominant culture. This episode I speak to one of our Gold Coast Global Shapers, Beatrice Valek, to understand more about the difference that intersectional gender, race and class injustices make in our world.
She breaks down some of the questions we (at least I!) have had about acknowledging inequality in every day life, and defines some key terms like cisgender, intersectional feminism, and what's with the loud and proud pro-nouns? These topics may be trending now, but Beatrice and I discuss how we can move to implement long-lasting systemic change that makes open-mindedness and allies the 'new norm', through better education, activism and empathy at all ages; "We all have the ability to mobilize our privilege."
Beatrice Valek is a cultural worker, activist, State Facilitator of the One Woman Project and student of the University of Queensland.
Cisgender: people whose gender identity matches their sex assigned at birth
